Japanese car industry at a standstill

Japanese car industry at a standstill

Following the devastation of the earthquake and tsunami which ripped through many areas in the North of Japan several weeks ago, several major Japanese car companies have suspended production and some factories of the country's biggest car manufacturers are still shut down.

Tragically, some 7,200 people have now been confirmed dead and the government said it expects the death toll to exceed 10,000. Nearly 11,000 people remain missing and millions have been left homeless.

Toyota, the world's top automobile manufacturer, immediately suspended production at all its domestic car plants and parts factories and has estimated a production decline of 40,000 vehicles. The company has announced that it does not plan to restart production until later this week, and puts its production loss at some 16,000 vehicles.

The factories, even those that have not been severely damaged, could start-up again in the coming days but not for long due to the massive disruption to their supplier network. Toyota Motor Corp resumed the production of repair or replacement parts yesterday, however assembly plants throughout Japan remain closed, spelling a knock-on effect for the production of 95,000 vehicles.

Honda and Nissan have also temporarily halted operations, while Fuji Heavy Industries, maker of Subaru cars, closed five factories having suffered partial building and equipment damage. All three Mitsubishi plants based in Japan came away unscathed by the disaster, however some of its major suppliers were affected, halting plant operations until mid week.

Before the earthquake, Japan was making 37,000 cars and trucks each day. It exported more than half of them. Fourteen percent of the 7.2 core vehicles produced worldwide last year were made in Japan.

Most of the Japanese carmakers are based in the south of Tokyo, which was able to evade the calamity. However, senior importers have reported that the damage to the overall infrastructure in the country could cause a more lasting impact.

A shortage of parts shipped from Japan has already triggered a slowdown of production at the North American plants of Toyota, Subaru and General Motors in an attempt to conserve parts stockpiles. These problems will soon have further repercussions abroad. Japan is the world's second-largest car exporter (after Germany) and more than one in every ten cars produced in the world comes from Japan. In 2010, the export market (including cars and parts) was worth 130 billion dollars.

According to the carmaker, 60 percent of the cars sold in Europe are manufactured in Japan, but it can take about six weeks for Toyota vehicles to travel from Japan to Europe. This means that over the next five weeks, European dealers will still be receiving cars - or car parts - manufactured before the earthquake and the tsunami. Any disruptions in European or American plants would only begin to occur by the middle of April.

Used Rolls Royce - Who Owns One?

Used Rolls Royce - Who Owns One?

Rolls-Royce are renown the worldwide for providing luxury cars to the wealthy and the famous. Eddie Murphy, Puff Daddy, David Beckham and ‘Lord of the Dance’ Michael Flatley amongst others are well known owners of these prestigious cars. Lennon has his Rolls painted in psychedelic whirls and the Sultan of Brunei had some of his 5,000 Rolls-Royces covered in golden bodywork. All of these are surely pleasing names for the famous car company to be linked with, be it their modern coupes or their vintage used Roll-Royce models from the 60s and 70s.

However, there is one name that I’m sure Rolls-Royce do not cherish as much as the others. That is the name of Robert Mugabe the Zimbabwean President. He is regularly seen parading in front of his starving nation in his vintage models, decked out in the highest luxury. Of course, we are all aware that Rolls-Royce are the pinnacle of motoring comfort and style – and their excellence is always admired and revered. Those who dream of fame and wealth, also dream of owning the best cars available. However, leading a nation in economic collapse and with a population starving, driving about in a glimmering Rolls-Royce perhaps isn’t the best example to set.

I am not saying that for a second Mugabe’s biggest crime is flaunting his automotive taste and wealth. We all know that he is far worse than that. I just wonder how Rolls-Royce address such a scenario: being linked to one of the most despised men on the planet. It is like Hitler and his Mercedes-Benz – a very tricky personality to distance yourself from. ‘Drive the new Mercedes-Benz M Class – the car for every psychotic dictator. Admire your genocide in style!’

Another infamous face that could threaten Rolls-Royce’s reputation, and ruin their credibility is that of Jason Kay. Not familiar? Remember that band Jamiroquai who had such songs as ‘Cosmic Girl’ and ‘Virtual Insanity’? Well their lead singer, the one with the long hear and obsession with hats that look like stalactites, is Jason Kay. He is a self confessed petrol-head and leader of the Top Gear ‘Star in a Reasonably Priced Car’ and a full scale nit. I think one of his annoying traits is that I begrudge any man who has written such awful songs the luxury of a Rolls-Royce.

I guess my point is that for every worthy celebrity spotted in a Roll-Royce there is another not so worthy keeping the balance. And it is these people holding Rolls-Royce back from their old status as the car you can only dream about. They used to be a car for the elite, the ultimate. Part of that mystic and charm has faded, when you see Alan Sugar, a man who invented the world’s worst computers, in one. It seems that all I have to do to get my hands on one is commit terrible human rights violations like Mr Mugabe. Or flog dodgy computers. Or pen possibly the most diabolic pop songs on this earth.

The Important Role of Disk Brakes

The Important Role of Disk Brakes

Disc brakes perform the most important task on your vehicle that is it ensures that you can stop when you want to. You may have a two wheeler, a four wheeler or even a massive heavy vehicle, but the fact remains that in all of these, you will probably find a disc brake for sure. There are two main types of brakes that are used in vehicles, the disc brakes and the drum brakes, but the disc brakes are way more popular due to its superior efficiency and powerful braking especially during the wet conditions.

To state in a very easy way, a disc brake consists of two pads that clasps a rotor, which is actually nothing but a rotating disc, connected to the wheels of the vehicle through an axle. When we press on the brakes, we are actually controlling the clasping power of the clamp. On pressing the brakes, the pads or clamps come together to stop the rotor from spinning and that in turn slows down and stops the vehicle ultimately.

Pull up on the emergency brake or just press on the brake pedal to use the disc brakes for stopping your car, but if you are riding a motorbike, then it may not be so easy. You would be required to press the right hand lever and the rear left foot lever together in a motorbike in order to stop it with more efficiency and also to prolong the life of the brakes due to less strain.

As with any other motor parts, you will need to maintain brakes as well, and mind you, the brakes are the most important part of your car that you should maintain well and check up on regularly. Check to make sure that the brake pads are thick enough as bare pads will cause the disc brake damage and you do not want that. Check to see if the brake fluid is up to its rim in the reservoir, if it is not then refill it to the rim as that will not only help your brake’s efficiency, but also increase the life of your brakes.

With the first signs of cracking or scarring, you should see a qualified professional for maintenance of your disc brakes because if you do not, and the disc brakes crack up, then they can not be repaired and must be totally replaced. Maintain them well and regularly to prolong the lives of your vehicle’s disc brakes.

Disc brakes were earlier made totally out of steel, but with the modern days upon us, there are disc brakes these days that have strategic hallowed out areas which allow the extra heat that is generated, to escape through them. This is actually a great innovation that has reduced the chances of warping of the brakes due to excessive heat generation and therefore increased the disc brake’s service period. As days pass, newer designs are arriving and will keep arriving, they will be targeting to get the brakes work more efficiently and also, last longer in the process.

You Will Find an Auto Part Dealer Whenever You Need One

You Will Find an Auto Part Dealer Whenever You Need One

All car users know how to drive but few know something more than that. What I mean is that among the car owners, the number of people who know about the auto parts of their cars is very limited. If you fall among that majority, it is therefore imperative to hire a professional then. Of course if you have a friend or a relative living nearby, who knows about auto parts, then you can go to him for advice regarding what needs fixing and what needs replacing. But, not always is that the case unfortunately and if you are one of those unlucky car owners who neither has an expert at disposal nor the skills personally, here is how you deal with the situation.

Before you buy your new auto part from a shop about which you have no idea, check out the auto part dealer’s history first before the purchase. A Crude but effective tool to rely upon, while inspecting your local auto parts store is to rely on your instincts. If you are unsure about the legitimacy of the shop and the price tags of the auto parts that the shopkeeper is asking from you, then take someone experienced in the field to determine the matter. The process is simple actually once you know a little about the market, you may not even need a friend if you do.

The choice may be vaster but the internet does not allow you to go inside a shop to check it out, the online dealers are therefore harder to decide on. Most are not, but some online dealers are actually scammers who just want to sell off their cheap and inferior products through the internet and you need to be careful of these sellers if you are planning to shop online. Even the legitimate websites sometime deceives through exaggeration of its product’s features. Use the help desk of the website in order to email your queries to their customer professionals for getting the acute information. The tone of the customer care professionals and the way in which they answer your questions will display the legitimacy of their website. If you find the tone to be confusing and the promises and features unrealistic, as well as the answers hazy, avoid the website. A genuine website will not only enlist an email id for you to question them about their products before or after the purchase, but it will also enlist the professional phone numbers for you to contact them.

You can always depend on the Better Business Bureau (BBB) to tell you if the website is legitimate or not. The good thing is that all the websites that are registered with Better Business Bureau are legitimate for sure, but that is not all. The Better Business Bureau has a rating system to rate the most popular and best websites registered under them; therefore you can depend on BBB to find the right website to buy all your auto parts from.

Porsche Car Covers: Best Protection

Porsche Car Covers: Best Protection

The Porsche Boxster is indeed a statement in class, elegance, engineering, velocity and dependability. These are all attributes of a Porsche Boxster, but perhaps the best attribute of Porsche Boxtster is the perfect harmony that Porsche has created through the appropriate pricing of the sports car. All said and done, the Boxster is still an expensive buy at more than sixty thousand dollars! It is also a valuable investment that you must protect from all harm. The first thing that you need to protect any car is of course, a cover, and for a Porsche Boxster, what can be more fitting than a custom fit car cover to do the job?

There are many reasons as to why the car needs a car cover, especially a car as expensive and as classy as a Porsche Boxster. Not that it would matter to someone who has spent so many dollars on his car, but still you should know that a custom fit car cover for your Porsche can at best cost you a few hundred dollars and that is a small amount indeed when considering what the cover is protecting.

It is quite possible that you leave your car in the sun for long, the incident can be unintentional or unconscious, but the damage that will be done is something that will hurt you for sure. The damage from sunlight is visible on your Boxster’s finishing.

Bird droppings are something that you just can not avoid wherever you park it and although you may consider that to be something that you can just wash it off, sunlight and bird droppings together can seriously damage your car’s paint job if left unclean for a significant amount of time.

It is not impossible that a nearby jealous human being will try to damage your brand new Boxster by putting scratches on your car, it is infuriating but once done, you will rue the fact that you did not get a custom fit cover for your new car.

Acid rain, hail, snow, sleet and even excess moisture can damage your new Boxster significantly.

Minor impacts can lead to minor damages also on your car’s body, so with a protective and fitting cover, you will protect your car against the smaller impacts effectively.

If you allow insects to have access to your car by leaving it unprotected, then they may be frequent visitors and will probably nest too! Covering it up well will not give the insects any such chance.

Pets like cats and dogs can damage or at least make your car very dirty in your absence as they have the tendency to jump up on cars and run around leaving dirty footprints behind.

The final and the most common reason why people cover up their objects in the first place is dust. Even if it is a Porsche Boxster, it does not look anything like itself if it is not clean.

Just make sure that your car cover is guaranteed and also check if it is a high quality four layer cover. Mirror pockets on the sides promise a better fit for your car, so try to get a custom fit car cover with side mirror pockets from a reputed company, like Covercraft for example.

Used Car Dealers - Good, Bad and Very Ugly

Used Car Dealers - Good, Bad and Very Ugly

Not everyone can afford a brand new car. And for many who can, they simply choose to buy a used vehicle once it has gone through its initial steep depreciation of the first year. When it comes to making that used car purchased, it's frequently done from used car dealers.

These car dealers have garnered a pretty bad reputation over the years. Even movies tend to depict them as a bunch of losers selling vehicles that should for the most part have been sent to the junk piles. Consumers have lodged many complaints over the years alleging everything from failure to live up to guarantees all the way up to fraud.

But are they really that bad? Depends. Sure, there are plenty of dealerships out there for both new and used vehicles that operate on the fringe of the law. They make promises that they won't put in writing. They outright lie to the buyers, and they rarely point out important details in the fine print. Is this all their fault, however? What about being an educated consumer and understanding the deal you are entering into?

One of the most common problems consumer have is the type of financing available. Even though there are many credit worthy middle class families who make a conscious decision to buy a good used car, finance companies typically charge higher interest rates no matter what your credit rating. Even someone with an excellent FICO score can expect to pay 2% more on a used car loan than on a new one. Many dealerships thrive on these loans because they get commissions, or kickbacks, for each buyer who finances through them.

Some dealers do nothing but buy and sell used cars; it doesn't matter what make or model. You might be able to find a decent car, but you can't expect the sales person to know much about each vehicle. They aren't experts in all models ever made. Perhaps they aren't expert in any model at all. All they know is how to sell you a car from their lot.

When you are buying a car, any car, it's a normal assumption that you'll be able to ask questions that pertain to that specific model. To compound the issue, many used cars aren't even sold with their original owner manuals. You might find a car you absolutely love, but don't buy it on looks or price alone.

Before making any commitments at any dealership, and that includes even making a "refundable" deposit to hold the car, do some research. Go home and check out that particular make and model. Look for recalls, consumer reviews, and pricing information. Run a CarFax report if the dealership won't do this for free. You'll need the VIN for that vehicle, and by law they have to give it to you.

Take it for a long test drive. Some dealers like to steer you around their parking lot or maybe around the block. Make sure you get it on a highway, test the brakes, test the pickup, and then call your insurance company for a quote.

Bike racks - oftentimes, it is necessary for people to bring or transport their bikes to the actual biking site. They cannot really ride anywhere they like. Gas cans - do you want to save up on gasoline? Given the sporadic rise of gasoline prices nowadays, many people now practice buying gasoline at discount prices and store them up for later use. For you to do such practice, make sure that you securely transport your fuel from the gas station to your home's storage area.

First, you need a gas can that is approved by OSHA - those types which have features that would prevent spills and spews of gas fumes. Furthermore, make sure not to store the gasoline for too long especially if your storage area is not in optimal condition. Fuel stabilizers can be a great help, but still, make sure that you use the gas a few days after you have bought it.

This is an initial list of the essential auto accessories that you may want to have in your vehicle. Make sure that you look up a worthy and well-known manufacturer of these accessories before purchasing.

The Advantage of a Diesel Engine

The Advantage of a Diesel Engine
A vehicle that runs on diesel engine has many advantages over the other vehicles that are dependent on other engines. Powerful torque and fuel efficiency are some of the advantages to name a few but not all. Maintaining a car that is diesel driven is pretty easy too. Acceleration and the overall engine power of a diesel car is not up to the expectation of some motor heads, but what they do not understand is that a diesel engine powered car can be more powerful than what it already is, just by a few modifications alone. Moreover, after this process it does not lose out on fuel efficiency either.

It is because of the invention of Rudolf Diesel’s 1892 patent of the engine that we have an option today other than the internal combustion engine that runs on gasoline and powers most vehicles these days. The hybrid, rotary engines are also an option though. Perhaps North America has seen the application of diesel engines mainly and largely in buses and pick up trucks.

Diesel vs. gasoline

Gasoline engines require spark plugs and they need to be tuned up because these work on an air/fuel mixture to create the necessary power to run the car. Diesel engines do not require spark plugs at all because these use the process of air combustion to provide their cars with the necessary power.

The diesel fuel is of a higher density than gasoline so the twenty to thirty percent fuel that one saves more than the gasoline powered engine is no surprise.

Not only does the gasoline engine have more pats that may need repairing and maintaining, but also the overall lifespan of a diesel engine is much more than the gasoline engine.

Diesel engines are in many ways better than gasoline engines, but that does not necessarily mean that they are flawless. Diesel engines too have their share of flaws and problems and that is the reason why there is not a majority of vehicles in the states that run on diesel engines.

The first reason is that most of these engines can not pass the strict emissions control standards simply because they pollute more. This environmental challenge that the diesel engine faces is promised to be somewhat solved by VW, through its new series of engines that are due to come out son enough.

Acceleration is a problem that can not be solved totally even with modifications and that deters most Americans as a diesel engine requires almost double the effort to accelerate to full speed.

As the days pas by us, more and more technological advances are made everyday, so we are hopeful about diesel engines overcoming these set backs as well. In fact, aftermarket product manufacturers already are able to somewhat lift the low power quotient of a diesel engine to acceptable standards. These experts are raising both the hp and the torque of the diesel engines to significant levels without cutting down the fuel efficiency even by a single percent.

The Audi Q7 4.2FSI - Pointless Yet Poignant

The Audi Q7 4.2FSI - Pointless Yet Poignant

One of the most pointless yet poignant rides that I have had the opportunity to drive with total abandon is the Audi Q7 4.2. FSI. This car is now entering its fourth year of production and it is extremely pointless because it is a huge, petrol hungry therefore politically incorrect vehicle. It is also the love of people who think that bungalow sized SUVs, which are rubbish off road, are the correct vehicle to own. It is one car which is as long as a standard Mercedes S-class but heavier (at 2250kg), wider and much taller. Anything that is bigger than an S-class is pretty pointless in some ways. And when tree loving eco friendly terrorists tell you that it burns more petrol than the entire nation of Timor Leste at one go you may be inclined to believe them due to the 350bhp 4.2liter V8 powering it.

This bulk carrier can carry 7 people as there is a 7 seater version but to say that it is a people carrier is wrong as most owners will never carry anyone other than himself, or use a driver with him seated behind. To say it is a proper off road SUV is even more pointless as no one is going to trash a S$322,000.00 vehicle in the rain forest of Pahang and that it comes with on road spec tires that have the grip of leather soles on a polished floor. We also have to note that it does not have a proper low range transfer case, but the usual Quattro All Wheel Drive system that you may also find in the A4 Quattro. It does have a ride height adjustable suspension, but that function will only be used to lower the rear so that the owner can load his or her groceries with ease.

However, while it is huge, it is like any well designed German uber-mobile. It is so easy to drive (fast) and it is easy to handle. This is partly due to having 350bhp at your feet. Anything with 350bhp at your feet is usually nimble, from a certain point of view that is. Actually this is why the Q7 is poignant. An extremely large and powerful as well as politically incorrect car is very satisfying to drive as it has the 'in your face' attitude that we sometimes yearn for in a car. Four grown men in a Q7 at the traffic lights powering off at the first sight of green is a monumental thing. The Q7 has enough torque to carry four passengers from 0 to 100km/h in about 7.5 seconds. It was like the starship Enterprise doing warp factor 6. It ain't no Millennium Falcon if you get my drift. And the Perodua Kelisa driver beside us at the lights was left thinking about how a barn could accelerate faster than he ever thought possible.

Now these four grown men did not think of heading to the first hip and cool nightspot to show off the Audi to the girls, but headed for some "teh tarik" at a "mamak" shop. Alfresco was the way to go and I found out that reversing and parking the darn thing was easy, especially with the Audi Multi Media Interface (MMI) monitor which has park assist features, a decently light but not dead in feeling steering and the ergonomic driving position of the Q7. The MMI feature is pretty straightforward and not like some 1st Generation BMW I(diot) drive.

It was after this session of tea, gossip and lots of car talk that my friend took over the driving chores for another round of trashing, er, driving. It was during this session we found out that the hard corners that I did wasn't hard enough as we were able to put the barn into a slightly four wheel drift while blasting through a sweeping corner. Surprisingly the ESP, if it was in operation, was not intrusive at all and the adjustable (at a push of a button) suspension was hard in its sports/dynamic setting but never uncomfortable. Body roll was kept in check and a barn danced like a hippo in a tutu. Bulky yet able to do some ballet. This shows you that Audi can make a barn corner extremely well.

And one more reason why its a poignant drive. The noise from that V8 FSI is superb even though people outside the car may hear more of it than the people driving it. Remember that this is the same engine in the B7 Audi RS4 and it is a marvelous engine. Any engine that can pull a barn with four grown men deserves a worthy mention. I liked driving it even better than a 1.8TFSI A4 which felt very competent but slightly clinical. But even if I had the money to plonk for one, I'd still buy a sports saloon or a coupe. Driving a Q7 is unreal, but what's the point of buying one if you really enjoy driving? There are cars like Mercedes CLS, C63 or the M5 which I'd rather buy. Or if I ever felt like buying a 2250kg car I'd save up and buy a Bentley Continental (which is a far off dream) These are real cars for enthusiastic drivers. Low center of gravity is the main reason. With low CG, means more cornering confidence and faster cornering speeds for me. The high up SUV style driving position isn't something that adds to a driver's confidence levels when he's pushing it. A barn can't handle as well as a proper sorted out car no matter what technology you throw at it due to its height. And with that you know how pointless and poignant the Audi Q7 is.

Protect the Porsche Legacy With a Custom Car Cover

Protect the Porsche Legacy With a Custom Car Cover

Your vehicle is not only a necessity it is also something we enjoy driving. With the high cost of fuel and with the economy being what it is, people are keeping their vehicles for longer periods of time. To maintain the car’s over all appeal a custom car cover is a wise choice. It will protect your car from the elements and keep it looking sharp.

When the name Porsche is mentioned it automatically brings to mind a fast sleek racing machine. The type of car, automotive dreams are made of. The Porsche marquee was in the works long before Ferdinand Porsche started his own car manufacturing company. Over his illustrious career, which spanned over fifty years, he worked with Daimler, Mercedes, Daimler Benz and Volkswagen.

In 1931 it was Ferdinand’s independent design firm that came up with the design for the Volkswagen Beetle. He started out as a test driver and draftsman at his father’s firm. To help keep his family afloat during hard times he designed race cars and the first Porsche sports car that would begin the legacy.

The Porsche 356 was the first car under this brand and it had an enhanced 40 horsepower Volkswagen engine and the rest of the parts came from wherever he could find them. A Porsche 356 won its first race just 1 month after the first vehicle left the factory.

Regular production started on the 356 in 1950 and was followed up in 1954 with a speedster vehicle. In 1956, just six years after the first one rolled out of the factory the 10,000th Porsche was finished. The company did not find its flagship model until 1963. It was the 911 and is still an icon today. It had a 2.0 liter 6 cylinder engine. Within the decade, the entry level, high performance and Targa versions were released.

The Porsche 356 ended production in 1965; however its engine was in the entry level 912. In 1987 the 250,000th Porsche 911 rolled off the factory floor. Porsche has always been a winner on the race track. The 356SL had a victory at Le Mans in 1951 and the 550 Spyder took its first overall victory at the Targa Florio.

Today the company is still building on its strong pedigree, both on and off the race track, and has refocused its development of the flagship 911. In July of 1996 the one millionth Porsche was rolled off the factory line. Today, there are four basic models of Porsche on the market and they include the Boxster, the Cayman, the Cayman SUV and the 911.

Most of us will probably never own a Porsche in our lifetime. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t keep the vehicle we own in mint condition. A car cover not only will protect your car from the elements it will also keep it cooler in the summer. To protect your investment a car cover with a locking system will also deter thieves. Using a car cover that is specifically designed for your vehicle will keep it looking sharp for years to come.

Muscle Car History

Muscle Car History

Cars are a necessary part of our lives today. However, we also drive cars which suit our personal tastes and for pure enjoyment. Your car makes a major statement about your personality. Your vehicles are also a major investment and you want to do everything you can to keep them looking good for a long time. No matter what type of vehicle you have, whether it is a new car or a classic you should cover it with a car cover when not in use.

The muscle car era has probably given us some of the most desirable and collectable cars in history. Even today, muscle cars can be seen and are still in high demand. They have a distinctive look with their wide profiles, sharp lines and plenty of chrome. Their looks are muscular and the V8 engines fast. Some of the cars that fit into this category include the Dodge Charger and the Pontiac GTO.

To be classified as a muscle car the vehicle has to meet some criteria. It is a mid size vehicle with a V8 engine and was produced between 1965 and 1973. The muscle car models had the added V8 engine and special trims. They usually handled better because they had optimal suspension and braking.

The first baby boom generation coincided with the muscle car era. At this time, WWII had just ended and the soldiers came home and before long there were babies being born everywhere. At this same time the cars of this time period were pretty conservative when it came to speed and styling.

The new baby boomers were attracted to the muscle car for two reasons. One being the price and the other was the power and speed. Before this if you wanted a faster car you had to have it custom built and that took a lot of time and money. This changed in 1964 when the Pontiac Tempest offered a GTO package that added a V8 engine and floor shifted transmission. It also had GTO badges and special trim.

In 1965, along came the Ford Mustang. The Mustang is technically called a Pony Car because it is small and compact with a big engine. However, they are usually put in the same category as a muscle car. During the first two years of production of the Mustang there were over 1.5 million models sold.

Just as the muscle car craze was in top speed, there were three things that happened to put an end to the muscle car era. As the cars got bigger and more powerful, the insurance companies started adding large surcharges to these high powered cars. This helped to push the muscle cars out of the young driver’s price range.

At this same time Congress was starting to take a harder stance on controlling vehicle emissions. In 1973 leaded gasoline was banned and automakers had to shift from making more powerful cars to ones that had lower emissions. The final reason for the end of the muscle car was the 1973 OPEC oil embargo. Gas became very scarce at this time and auto makers started making cars that were smaller, more compact and fuel efficient.

Just remember no matter what type of car you have, you should keep it protected with a custom car cover when not in use.

Lamborghini – the Ultimate in Exotic Cars Needs the Ultimate in Car Car – a Custom Car Cover

Lamborghini – the Ultimate in Exotic Cars Needs the Ultimate in Car Car – a Custom Car Cover
When the word Lamborghini is said, it brings to mind an exotic, sleek Italian super-fast racing machine. They are extortionately expensive, both to buy and to run, and most people have only had a glimpse of one through media outlets. This car is definitely a status symbol and only the elite can afford to buy and maintain one. Given all that, people are still fascinated by this dream machine and while they cannot afford to own or even drive one, seeing a Lamborghini driving by is poetry in motion.

Your vehicle may not be an expensive Italian import but it is your pride and joy. To keep your vehicle, no matter what it is, in mint condition you should always protect it with a car cover when not in use. Custom car covers are designed to fit your exact model of vehicle and conforms to the body to protect the exterior.

When Ferruccio Lamborghini decided to start building cars he already had two factories. One of them produced air conditioners and the other tractors. He wanted to take on Ferrari’s cars because he felt they were too noisy and plain looking. He envisioned a car that was powerful and fast with a luxurious interior to appeal to the elite who had money to spend and were concerned about looks and luxury.

In 1963, his first dream car, the 350 GTV, was introduced at the Turin Auto Show. In 1966, the Lamborghini Miura was produced.  1968 was when he produced the Lamborghini Espada 400 GT and it was a major hit over the next ten years. The wealthy playboy’s in the 1960’s preferred the brightly colored Lamborghini Miura and they could be found parked in major international airports and hotel resorts around the wealthy parts of the world frequented by the jet set.

The 1970’s were a dark period for the Lamborghini Company. The company was suffering, just like all the other automakers, with the oil and economic crisis of the 1970s. Ferruccio sold most of his holding to Georges Henri Rossetti, a wealthy Swiss car enthusiast. The company continued, but without its founder it lost some of its direction and creativity.

The company went downhill from there until it was sold to Patrick and Jean Claude Mimran in 1980. The company than went on to be owned by Chrysler until in 1998, Audi stepped in and bought the company. It introduced the Murcielago and the car dubbed the “baby Lamborghini”, the Gallardo.

Recently the company has introduced the Lamborghini Reventon that is based on the Murcielago sports car. Its design was inspired by the F22 Raptor fighter jet. It is an open top car that has an aggressive wedge shape. The interior of exclusive vehicle reminds you of a modern plane cockpit.

It has a V12 engine that can go from zero to sixty two miles per hour in 3.4 seconds. It has a top speed of 205 mph. The Reventon is available in only one color and that was specially created for this powerful car.

You may never own a Lamborghini, but you can always dream about having one. Any car is a major investment and you want to do everything you can to keep it in good running condition and looking sharp. By washing it often and using a car cover when not in use, you will have a car that you are proud to be seen in for years to come.

Car Logos Brand the Identity of a Car But You Have to Preserve Its Looks – Use a Custom Car Cover

Car Logos Brand the Identity of a Car But You Have to Preserve Its Looks – Use a Custom Car Cover
Ever since the first car was invented we have had an attachment and fascination with vehicles – the car badge or marque has become a status symbol of itself. Currently with everything being so spread out and with all the different obligations a person has, a vehicle is essential. Besides the need for a car for everyday purposes we are also like vehicles for their style and power they have under the hood. No matter which type of car you have you should protect your investment with a car cover. A car cover protects your car from the elements and also deters thieves.

Sports cars are very appealing and there are several different companies that have built a reputation for building fast and stylish sports cars. Most of them are household names and most everyone has seen one of their vehicles at one time or another. Usually, you can tell what type of car it is just by looking at the logo on the vehicle. Below you find a brief description of some of the popular sports car logo seen on vehicles today.

The Ferrari logo features a prancing horse or a cavallino rampante. This logo first appeared in the 1920’s on race cars built by Enzo Ferrari for Alfa Romeo. The GT models have a rectangular badge and the cars used for the race team have a shield shaped logo with the letters “SF” at the bottom. The yellow background is to symbolize Enzo Ferrari’s hometown of Modena. The prancing horse comes from a WWI flying ace. He painted a black horse on the side of his planes for good luck; so Enzo decided to use the same symbol for his cars.

The Bentley badge is the capital letter B with wings. It can be seen on a vehicle as a hood ornament or as a flat emblem. This logo appeared on the first test care in 1919 a Bentley 3 ½ liter. The B on the badge is for Bentley and the wings symbolize the speed of their cars.

The Bugatti has two different logos. One is the letters EB, with the E backwards and the other is a red oval with the name Bugatti spelled out. Both of the logos are in reference to the founder Ettore Bugatti. In 1910 the first Bugatti had the red oval and the second logo can be seen on later models when the company was reincarnated.

The Jaguar has two different hood ornaments. One is just a cat’s face and the other is a full bodied jaguar leaping from the hood of the car. The leaping jaguar was used on the vehicles made before WWII and the face was in use by the 1950’s.

It doesn’t matter if you own a fancy sports car or a compact car, both need to be protected from the harsh elements, such as the sun. A car cover will keep you car cooler in the summer and will protect the car’s paint job from tree sap and bird droppings. A custom car cover is a good investment to keep your vehicle in prime condition.

Keep Your Rolls Royce in Mint Condition With a Custom Car Cover

Keep Your Rolls Royce in Mint Condition With a Custom Car Cover

Man has always had a fascination with automobiles and the power they have. Today, for most people a car is a necessity and not a luxury. Vehicles bought today are a major investment and we want to keep them in the very best shape for as long as possible. To do this you need to make sure you do regular maintenance on the vehicle and wash it regularly. When your vehicle is not in use you should protect the paint finish with a custom car cover.

You might be surprised to learn that Rolls and Royce were actual people. Frederick Royce built the first Royce vehicles in 1904. He was a British electrical equipment manufacturer. The three two cylinder cars that Royce had built are what attracted Charles Rolls. Charles had been a car enthusiast for a long time and was the son of a baron. He had a dealership in London and was impressed with Royce’s engineering. They decided to become partners and it was decided that Royce would build the cars and Rolls would sell them.

In 1907 they introduced the Silver Ghost. It had a 6 cylinder engine and the inside was painted silver. This is the vehicle that got them noticed. Their reputation for reliability was cemented when the car was driven over 15,000 miles (very high ,ileage in those days) without having much wear on the car. Sadly, in 1910 Rolls was flying his biplane and crashed. He was killed instantly.

The Silver Ghost’s chassis was fortified and it was used as a combat car during WWI. After the war, the Jazz Age followed and people had money to spend. The Rolls Royce car was known by the nickname of Rollers. They even introduced a Baby Roller which was a little smaller. At this time, big cars were still very popular and the company introduce the Phantom I and Phantom II during the 1920’s.

The Rolls Royce Company grew much larger in the heady days of the 1980's. The Silver Spur and the Silver Spirit were both huge square looking, ultra luxury cars. They were the ultimate status symbol. In 2003 the company introduced an all new Phantom that was available as a coupe, convertible or sedan. In 2004 the Rolls Royce Company celebrated its 100th Anniversary.

Rolls Royce recently introduce the Rolls Royce Ghost and it is packed full of power and luxury. This mean machine can go from zero to sixty in 4.8 seconds. It also has a top speed of 155mph. The engine is a 6.6 liter turbo charged V12. Besides being powerful it is also the one of the most luxurious vehicles on the market today. The interior has a contemporary feel and has a combination of natural wood veneers and soft leather to let you drive in style.

You probably will never be one of the elite to own a Rolls Royce or even have the pleasure of riding in one. However, your vehicle is your pride and joy and you want to make sure you that is stays in good shape for a long time. By using a custom car cover you can keep your vehicle protected from scratches and harsh elements, like the sun.

How to clean your spark plug.

How to clean your spark plug.

First of all what is a spark plug? Spark plug is a device used in an internal combustion engine - that is, an engine that derives its power via exploding gases inside a combustion chamber -to ignite the air-fuel mixture. Time to time carbon builds up on the tip of the spark plug that delivers low mileage and can damage the whole engine. As factory advice it is a must to replace your spark plugs ever 100,000 miles.

It’s a must to check your spark plugs every 5000kms to your for any carbon build ups that can cause fluctuating rpm and poor combustions. Here are some steps on how to clean you spark plug.

Step1 Disconnect the spark cap or high tension wires

Step2 Remove spark plug( you will need a spark plug wrench) take fine grit sand paper or steel brush then brush the large threaded end of spark plug till you see silver metallic color.

Step3 Dip large threaded end of spark plug in bottle cap of gas/kerosene, then lay on nonflammable surface and light allow to burn out and cool this will get rid of all carbon build up on spark plug.

Step4 Check the gap of the tip of the plug using a feeler gauge, be sure to follow the correct gap specified by the manual. If you don’t have a gap gauge for the spark plug you can gap it with the skinny end of a butter knife be sure to use and old one for this can damage the knife.

Step5 Reinstall the spark plug to the motor. Be sure not to over tighten the plug to avoid loose threads.

Step6 Reconnect the spark plug cap or high tension wire. Start the motor then your good to go.

What is a fuel pump? What are the different kinds of fuel pump set ups? What does a fuel pump do exactly?

What is a fuel pump? What are the different kinds of fuel pump set ups? What does a fuel pump do exactly?

Fuel pump is one of the vital car parts. In order to understand how it works, and to learn to detect if it is not working properly – you need to learn more about it. This text will help you learn what a fuel pump is, how it works, and most importantly – how to figure out if something is wrong with it.

A fuel pump is a very important or (let us say) the essential car part crucial for internal combustion engines and devices. Fuel pump has one major function – to create a strong positive pressure and push the gasoline (transport it) to the car engine. Old school engines did not require these fuel pumps to start with, because they were relying on gravity to help engines receive fuel through a hose, from a compact fuel tank. In more recent designs and models, which are considered non-gravity feed inventions, fuel needs to be pumped in order to get from the tank to the engine. Fuel gets delivered to the carburettor under very low pressure, but is contrary to that, injected to the fuel injection system under extremely high pressure.

The fuel tank is the place where the fuel is being stored before being used during vehicle operation. The fuel pump is the part which basically pushes the fuel from the tank to the engine. It leads the fuel to the fuel injector, and from there the fuel gets infused into the car engine.

There are different types and kinds of fuel pumps for various vehicles. Two types are relevant and still exist and are vital for vehicles nowadays – mechanical fuel pumps and electric fuel pumps. Mechanical option was used in the past for various vehicles. This type of the fuel pump can be seen in your vehicle’s camshaft. Diesel fuel pump today, is a smaller version and it is an electronic device or component inside your vehicle. It is positioned inside the fuel tank of your car. Electric fuel pump requires power which is delivered to it from the battery of your vehicle.

Different kinds of vehicles require and have various pumps for fuel inside. For instance, carburetted engines have mechanical pumps also known as the low pressure pumps. These fuel pumps are positioned (mounted) outside of the fuel tank. On the other hand fuel injected engines use different kinds of fuel pumps. They are connected to electric fuel pumps and they are positioned inside their fuel tank. There is another option – one where vehicle is equipped with 2 fuel pumps. One is always constructed to work as a supply pump, which means it has low pressure and at the same time high volume. Other pump is located close to the engine, and it has very high pressure and low volume.

Fuel pumps are crucial for safe and proper functioning of your vehicle. Always visit mechanic if you experience any difficulties and keep in mind that safety always comes first!

Choosing the Right Winch for Your Ride

Choosing the Right Winch for Your Ride

Winches are mechanical devices used to recover your vehicle when caught in a tight spot. This special equipment is usually mounted on the front bumper. With the help of the rope or cable that is being winded up, a winch will always get you out from being stuck. In addition to recovery tool, it can transform your ordinary pickup truck or jeep into a utility machine.

Whether you are an off-road fanatic who seeks the most difficult challenges in the trail, someone who simply has the hobby to camp in the woods or a field worker who has a utility truck, you definitely need a sturdy and reliable winch to dominate those tough spots.

Unlike other exterior accessories that you can easily buy and install on your vehicle, choosing a winch can be complicated. This is because trucks and jeeps are different in terms of weight, performance and power. But knowing the important factors can make your winch selection easy and hassle-free.

Below is the basic guideline in choosing the right winch for your ride.

Vehicle Weight - The overall weight of your vehicle is important to determine if a certain winch can pull it smoothly. To calculate your vehicle's Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), start with your vehicle's curb weight, then add the weight of the supplies and equipment you'll typically be carrying.

Line Pull - This is the rated pulling capacity of winches that can safely pull your vehicle's GVW while overcoming hindrances encountered when you're stuck or on and incline. Moreover, this factor is also the combination of the tensile strength of the line on the drum and mechanical power of the winch. Selecting a winch with a rated line pull at least 12% greater than your GCW is highly recommended.

Line Speed and Length - Line speed refers to how fast a winch can spool the line on and off on its drum. Generally, winches are extremely fast when unloaded, though they will noticeably slow down during hauling. Remember that a faster line speed usually require a greater amount of electrical power and is available in a more expensive package. On the other hand, having a longer line length allows you to reach out farther. But sometimes having a long line can cause jamming and twisting. For this, you may want to get a winch with short line and carry an extra cable to use an extension if needed.

Motor type - Giving some considerations on the type of motor is crucial because this is the core of the operation of winches. Basically, there are three types of winch motors - permanent magnet (PM), series wound (SW) and hydraulic motor. Electric SW motors are more powerful than electric PM motors. If you don't usually go driving on tough trails, a PM-powered winch is enough for your needs. The hydraulic motor is powered by the vehicle's power steering pump. This means that you can do winching using hydraulic if the engine is running.

Type of Rope - You can choose between a metal cable and synthetic rope. Metal cable is less expensive, heat resistant and can withstand more abrasive operation. However, it is comparatively heavy and prone to rusting. Since the cable is made of metal, injury can happen when it suddenly breaks and whips through the air. Alternatively, synthetic rope is light in weight and doesn't rust. But it can fray easily especially when rubbing against rocks and other sharp objects.

Giving enough time to focus on these important factors can lead you to a smart decision. After all, the winch that you are going to buy will save you and your favorite ride.
